Del Mar, meaning "Of the Sea" in Spanish, is a coastal town in San Diego County, California, situated along the Pacific Ocean. Originally established as a seaside resort in 1885, Del Mar officially incorporated as a city in 1959. According to the 2020 census, its population was 3,954, down from 4,161 in 2010.
Del Mar is known for hosting the annual San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and summer horse racing events at the Del Mar Racetrack. The Surf Line railroad runs along coastal bluffs about 40 feet (12 meters) above the beach for 1.7 miles (2.7 km) within the city. Each year, coastal erosion gradually wears down these bluffs. In September 2020, the North County Transit District installed steel beams at the bluff base to stabilize it for an estimated 20 to 30 years. Del Mar officials requested that the transit agency cover the shotcrete wall with natural soil and native plants. The city council, the California Coastal Commission, and residents have opposed the transit district's plan to add a chain-link fence to prevent pedestrians from crossing the tracks to reach the beach, despite safety concerns from train incidents.
The southern half of Del Mar spans a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) stretch with limited legal beach access, but its unique offshore reefs and wave patterns make it one of San Diego County’s premier surfing spots.
