why invest in La Mesa
Located in La Mesa County, about nine miles east of downtown La Mesa, La Mesa is often called the "Jewel of the Hills." Known for its charming neighborhoods, walkable downtown, and vibrant community events, La Mesa offers a blend of small-town atmosphere and suburban convenience. The city is celebrated for its rolling hills, scenic views, and welcoming vibe.
History of La Mesa
Long before European settlers arrived, La Mesa was home to the Kumeyaay people. They lived in the area for centuries, practicing horticulture and hunting and gathering.
In the late 18th century, Spanish missionaries colonized the region. The land that is now La Mesa became part of Mission La Mesa de Alcalá and later Rancho El Cajón, a Mexican land grant owned by the family of Don Miguel de Pedrorena, a notable Californio ranchero.
The name "La Mesa" translates from Spanish to "the table" or "plateau," describing the area’s flat, elevated geography. In 1868, Robert Allison purchased 4,000 acres here, leading to the establishment of a small community. The abundant natural springs in the area were a valuable resource and helped fuel its growth.
La Mesa was officially founded in 1869 and incorporated as a city on February 16, 1912. Today, it’s a thriving suburb known for its rich history and vibrant community life.
