Point Loma, meaning "Hill Point" in Spanish and "Black Earth" in Kumeyaay, is a seaside community in San Diego, California. This hilly peninsula is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, San Diego Bay and Old Town to the east, and the San Diego River to the north. Along with the Silver Strand/Coronado peninsula, Point Loma defines the entrance to San Diego Bay, separating it from the Pacific Ocean. The name "Point Loma" refers to both the peninsula and the neighborhood.
With an estimated population of 47,981 (including Ocean Beach) as of the 2010 Census, the Peninsula Planning Area covers approximately 4,400 acres (1,800 hectares) and includes much of Point Loma. Historically significant as the landing site of the first European expedition in what is now California, Point Loma is home to two major military bases, a national cemetery, a national monument, and a university, along with a blend of residential and commercial areas.
