why invest in Poway
Located in the heart of Poway County, Poway is known as "The City in the Country." Despite its modern development and suburban feel, Poway has maintained much of its rural charm and open space, with an emphasis on preserving its natural beauty and rich history.
History of Poway
Poway’s history dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who lived in the region for centuries before European settlers arrived. The name "Poway" is derived from the Kumeyaay word “Pawiiy,” which is believed to mean “arrowhead” or “the meeting of little valleys.
During the Spanish colonial period, Poway became part of the lands associated with Mission Poway de Alcalá, used mainly for cattle grazing and agriculture. By the late 1800s, American settlers moved into the area, establishing farms and ranches. The fertile land made Poway an agricultural hub, with crops like peaches, apricots, and dairy farming becoming economic staples.
Poway remained an unincorporated rural community for most of its history until its incorporation as a city on December 1, 1980. Since then, it has developed into a vibrant suburban city while retaining much of its rural heritage.
